Obesity is Everywhere
I just got back from a business trip and I’m exhausted! When I first started working (not too long ago), I was so pumped for my 1st business trip – the excitement, the mystery, the allure. After the first trip, my excitement waned but I still really love the fact that my job (nutrition communications) allows me to travel. I consider myself lucky that I enjoy my job and it allows me to occasionally venture out of Atlanta.
One thing I did notice while at this nutrition conference was that the population at this meeting was very representative of the general population – overweight. Now I’m no Twiggy and I have a sincere love for food but you would assume people at a nutrition conference would be somewhat healthy considering their knowledge of the risks of obesity.
One would think but one would be incredibly wrong. Many of the exhibitors at the convention were luring attendees with goodies such as candy, ice cream and other sweets. At a nutrition convention! No wonder these people are overweight - I would be too!
I must admit, I did my fair share of eating this week but it seemed a little hypocritical to me that we were all subconsciously advocating a “Do as I say, not what I do” mentality.
And as always, people were slurping down diet sodas while chomping down candy and moaning about wanting to lose weight.
Great start with the diet sodas but diet beverages are NOT a magic bullet. You can cut 150 calories a day by drinking diet soda but don’t fool yourself into thinking it’s okay to have 2 extra candy bars. Put the candy down.
All in all it was a successful trip. I learned a lot, met a lot of people and had a jolly good time.
