Anyone who has worked in a cubicle understands the difficulties of trying to conduct business and work in a 5 x 6 foot space with co-workers surrounding you on every side. It is inevitable that people around will hear your phone calls, know when you are eating lunch and can tell if you have a cold. Cubicle people tend to understand that these things naturally go along with sharing a work space, or so I thought.
A friend of mine that I work with recently got a call from someone in HR who informed her that an anonymous coworker that sits near her has complained that her voice is too loud and is a "distraction." I had the same reaction my friend did, who would go to HR and complain about something like that, why wouldn't they just ask her to be quiet? I mean that is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. My friend was really confused about how to handle the situation and has now resorted to whispering on the phone or to coworkers that come by her desk. I felt really bad because she was really upset about the crazy person that felt the need to report her distracting voice to HR, so I brought her a diet soda and took her out to lunch at this popular and crowded place. She was even whispering in the restaurant! If only there were enough office space for everyone!
