A diet soda a day keeps the kidney stones away

Well isn't this interesting! According to recent reports, people who are prone to kidney stones might just want to pick up a diet soda. Researchers at the University of California at San Francisco have determined that substancese found in commonly consumed sodas may be help dissolve kidney stones. The results of their study - which examined 15 popular diet sodas for their citrate and malate content - were discussed at the American Urology Association annual meeting. Apparently Diet Sunkist Orange contains the greatest amount of total alkali while Diet 7-Up has the greatest amount of citrate alkali. Other sodas with significant amounts of malate and citrate include Diet Canada Dry, Sierra Mist Free, Sprite Zero, Diet Orange Crush, Fresca, Diet Mountain Dew and Fanta Orange Zero. The researchers say these findings may be helpful in the development of dietary recommendations for patients with calcium nephrolithiasis and specifically those patients with hypocitraturia. Although health experts are continuing their research, they say that "patients with stone disease who do not drink soda may benefit from moderate consumption." Yet another reason to grab a diet soda!
